What Is Match To Sample (And Why Would I Train It)?!

Match to Sample is an example of concept training - taking a set of criteria and applying them to different situations.

Specifically, we are going to teach our dog that when we show them an item and then cue 'match it', they should target the matching pair.

It's easier to demonstrate than describe, so check out the clip of my co-instructor Ripley showing off his skills.

Another example of Match to Sample is scentwork - they are taking known criteria (find a specific scent and indicate on it), and applying them to different situations. In short - if you've taught your dog to Match to Sample using their nose, you can definitely teach them to Match to Sample using their eyes!

As to why - training our dogs is an important part of our lives with them. We want to make that training as varied as possible to provide the most enrichment. Aside from that, it will stretch YOUR skills as a trainer and give you confidence to try different things.

Meet Your Trainers

Sara has been involved in training dogs for over 25 years.  Whilst initially she was involved in agility, she has expanded her skills and knowledge extensively over the years.  Her particular passions include foundations, reinforcement strategies and scentwork.

Sara is a qualified canine hydrotherapist and Certified Professional Canine Fitness Trainer (CPCFT), and is currently studying for an OFQUAL Level 4 Diploma in Canine Coaching and Behaviour.

Her training philosophy is best described as ‘Do No Harm’, and focuses on positive reinforcement-based training that is adapted to each learner.  She aims to apply this to both people and dogs.

Sara is ably assisted in all her training by Ripley, a six-year old working cocker spaniel.  He is a big reason that she has significantly developed her training skills over the last few years!
