Train Along with Peak - Match to Sample
During a recent webinar talking all about concept training, I explained that I hadn't done this training with Peak. The main reason? He's a bit dim...
Buuuuut... I do love a challenge! So I'm going to give it a go 🙈
Join me, starting in early January 2026, whilst I tackle this training with Peak. It's likely to be a four to six week process.
I'll be writing up a summary of our sessions, as well as sharing the video - the good, the bad and the 'who knows what goes through his head' 😂 You'll have access to all the content until 30th June 2026.
Erm, hi, hello - what the heck is Match to Sample?!?
Good question - lemme try and explain...
Match to Sample is an example of concept training - taking a set of 'rules' and applying them to different situations. Specifically, I'm going to try and teach Peak that when I show him an item and then cue 'match it', he should target the matching pair. Simples, right?

Here's a little secret - if you've trained any sort of scentwork with your dog, then you may already have trained a match to sample concept (especially if you've done mantrailing or handler scent discrimination 😉
One of the questions raised during the webinar was whether this was suitable for all dogs, and how the training could be adapted for more 'pet dog' style classes. The thing is, the majority of the training is 'just' foundation work - indeed, most complex training is just the basics done very well!
Core concepts included:
- Go to station (and stay there)
- Nose target an object
- Wait for verbal cues
These are core, foundation skills - the magic lies in how we chain things together (and that's where the value is in this train along!) Oh, and did I mention you can add comments/ask questions?
