Is the '10s rule' moot in your house, because your dog can get there in 3s? Then read on ⬇️⬇️⬇️

In this replay of a live training session, I talk all about my approach to 'leave it'. Spoiler alert - it's probably a bit different to what you've learned before!

Most dog's default is to take things unless told to leave them. What if instead they learned to leave stuff until they're asked to take it? There's quite a difference between the two!

Many dogs are trained to listen for 'leave it', and whilst there's nothing wrong with that it can bring with it some confusion. When dogs aren’t sure what they should do in a situation, it can lead to hesitation, anxiety and inconsistent behaviour.

In this training, I explored a differnt approach; one that promotes clarity.  Clarity is kindness in dog training. When our dogs aren't sure about how they should behave in a given situation it can cause some anxiety. I want confidence, not confusion! This training helps them to learn a clear default behaviour instead.

In this training you will learn:

  • Why the traditional 'leave it' approach can create uncertainty for dogs
  • The difference between 'take by default' and 'leave by default' behaviour
  • How clarity reduces stress and builds confidence in dogs
  • A simple training shift that makes everyday situations easier for both you and your dog

Hi, I'm your host - Sara

I'm a Crocs wearing, treat bag toting, bobble hatted dog training nerd 😁I started dog training back in 1998, and have gone on to train and compete in agility, rally obedience, scentwork and more. I have a particular passion for foundations, but also love digging into more complex training concepts.

I've been supporting learners online and in person for over a decade, and I enjoy coming up with out-of-the-box solutions.

I set up Compass Canine in 2018, and it's all about choice and respect in dog training - for dogs and their guardians alike. I'm the author of Scentwork: Step by Step, which has now sold over 10,000 copies 😱

I'm ably assisted in all things dog training by my two spaniels, Ripley and Peak. That's who you'll be seeing in the video demos!
